Urology Testing & Diagnosis

The best treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis, and we offer advanced technology and testing to make sure we put you on the right path to good health. We also make testing convenient—all tests are available at both of our facilities: University Health’s Robert B. Green Campus and the Urology Services Clinic at the Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC).

Urologic Tests We Offer

First, your doctor will talk with you about your medical history and conduct a physical exam. Then, your doctor may recommend urologic testing to pinpoint your condition.

Tests we offer

  • Bladder ultrasound: This is a two-part test — one ultrasound is performed when you have a full bladder, and the second ultrasound is performed after you empty your bladder to check how well it drained.
  • Cystoscopy: A hollow tube with a tiny camera is used to examine your urethra and the lining of your bladder.
  • Digital rectal exam: The doctor will insert a lubricated, gloved finger into your rectum to locate abnormalities and examine the prostate (for men) or reproductive organs (for women).
  • Fluoroscopy: Specialized X-ray procedures involving injection of radiographic contrast are performed to better visualize the urethra, bladder, ureters and kidneys.

Lab tests and diagnostics

  • Magnetic resonance-ultrasound (MR/US) fusion biopsy of the prostate: Also called the UroNav fusion biopsy system, this test is a minimally invasive procedure to check for prostate cancer.
  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test: This is a blood test used to check for prostate cancer.
  • Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided biopsy: An ultrasound probe and tiny needle are used to take a biopsy of the prostate through the rectum.

UroNav Fusion Biopsy of the Prostate

We are the only facility in San Antonio to offer magnetic resonance-ultrasound (MR/US) fusion biopsy of the prostate (UroNav fusion biopsy system). This new biopsy method incorporates an image from an MRI into your ultrasound-guided biopsy for real-time pinpointing of the prostate and suspicious lesions.

This reduces the number of tissue samples required and is faster and less invasive than other biopsy methods.
