Your First Visit

Learn about your first visit to University Health after your referral for a kidney transplant.

What to Expect

Meet with several members of the transplant care team during your first visit. Each health care professional has a role in your comprehensive transplant care. The care team works with you on all the details of transplant care to help you make the best decisions about your care.

Care Coordination

Count on a pre-transplant coordinator to explain your first visit process, answer your questions and put you at ease.

Doctor Consultations

Meet with a kidney doctor who specializes in transplant. The nephrologist will review your medical history and perform an examination.

See a transplant surgeon to talk about your transplant options and what to expect from surgery.

Nutrition Recommendations

Get a diet and nutrition assessment from a dietitian to gauge whether you have adequate nutrition. Work with your dietitian if you need a nutrition boost before or after transplantation. The right balance of nutrients in your body will support and improve your recovery and outcome.

You may also meet with a dietitian throughout the transplant process if your transplant doctor thinks you need help with your diet.

Support Assessment

Talk with a social worker about:

  • Family and friend support
  • Nonmedical issues
  • Community resources
  • Insurance questions

Paying for Transplant Care

Speak with a University Health financial coordinator about paying for your transplant. Get help to obtain preauthorization for your evaluation exam and testing, kidney transplant surgery and follow-up care. They also can answer questions about your health care coverage.

Next Steps

Your pre-transplant coordinator will set up your kidney transplant evaluation and testing.
