Samantha Garcia's Journey to Achieving a Higher Education

Samantha GarciaUniversity Health is fortunate to have the brightest and most talented team members across all departments. That’s why University Health Foundation is proud to provide team members with resources they need to continue learning and growing as professionals in their fields.

Eric Daniel Hernandez was a junior at the University of Texas at San Antonio, pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. His family describes him as generous, a great friend and a wonderful son and brother. Tragically, on December 24, 2013, he passed away.

In honor of his memory, his family established the Eric Daniel Hernandez Memorial Scholarship to help University Health team members further their education. Each year, the University Health Foundation, along with the Hernandez family, awards this scholarship to two full-time team members who are currently enrolled in college courses.

“We established the scholarship to keep Eric’s legacy alive by supporting those who share his passion of learning and helping others,” said Laura Hernandez, Eric’s mother. “When selecting recipients, we look for individuals who embody Eric’s generosity, dedication and spirit.”

Samantha Garcia, a senior administrative assistant at University Health Transplant Institute, is a 2024 scholarship winner.

"The Eric Daniel Hernandez Scholarship will significantly impact my educational journey by easing the financial strain of tuition," Samantha said.

Samantha is studying to earn her bachelor of arts in business health care administration from Western Governors University with a goal of securing a managerial position with University Health, where she has worked for the past 15 years.

“Working in transplant with the kidney program, I have been able to see San Antonio’s diverse population as well as all the unique opportunities for learning and addressing varied health care needs. This job has been such a rewarding environment for both personal and professional growth. I look forward to contributing to and growing within this vibrant community once I graduate,” Samantha said.

Samantha's passion for health care began when her father faced a serious illness.

The compassionate care her family received inspired her to pursue a career in health care, where she hopes to make a similar impact.

Samantha credits her mother as her greatest inspiration in pursuing higher education.

"My mother has always been my rock and my biggest supporter. She worked tirelessly to provide for us and always emphasized the importance of education," Samantha said.

For University Health Foundation, supporting team members through scholarships helps ensure a dedicated and skilled workforce for University Health.

“I would say to anyone interested in supporting the scholarship fund, that I am incredibly thankful. Their generosity truly makes a difference for students like me, and it will help me focus on my studies and reach my goals without the constant stress of financial worries,” Samantha said.

The Hernandez family hopes this scholarship not only eases team members financial burden but also inspires them to pursue their dreams with the same enthusiasm that Eric had.
