Bringing your baby home after a stay in the NICU can feel both exciting and overwhelming but know that you are not alone. At University Health, our commitment to your family extends beyond your hospital stay. We are here to provide ongoing support and resources to help you go through with this new chapter with confidence.
When Can My Baby Leave the Hospital?
Having questions about your baby’s health, including when you can take them home, is completely normal. Your child’s stay in the NICU will vary on their condition and health needs. Before they are discharged, there are three milestones they need to meet:
- Demonstrate breathing control
- Successfully being fed by the mouth
- Pass the car seat test
To learn more about these steps and how you can support your baby during the process, watch this video.
How Should I Feed My Baby?
Feeding a preterm baby can be challenging, so don’t feel discouraged. Whether you are trying to breastfeed or use formula, our NICU staff is here to help. During your stay, you will watch your baby learn the important skills on how to eat. This includes how to suck, swallow and breathe, all at the same time!
Watch this video to learn how you can support your baby during the feeding process.
Preparing Your Home for Your Baby
Being a first-time parent doesn’t have to feel scary. Before bringing your baby home from the NICU, ask your baby’s medical team for what you need at home. This may include basic supplies, ways to create a safe sleeping space for your baby and having everyone in your circle up to date with the necessary vaccinations.
Watch this video for helpful tips on preparing your home for your baby.
Finding Support After Being Discharged
The time has finally come and your baby can go home! While this means you get to enjoy the comfort of your own home with your brand new baby, you will need a new support system.
Before your baby leaves the hospital, we recommend to discuss who will be part of your support team at home. Watch this video to hear how other parents were able to adapt to their new lives at home.
Follow-up Care After the NICU
Along with regular checkups, your preterm baby may need more follow-up appointments after leaving the NICU. Your baby’s doctors might suggest early intervention services to help them grow and develop. Sometimes this will include seeing a specialist depending on your baby’s needs. As your baby gets stronger and healthier, they’ll need fewer visits.
