Liver Treatments

Liver Treatments

The mission of the Texas Liver Institute is to work with partners who deliver outstanding research and clinical care. Texas Liver Institute is a world-renowned facility known for advanced care for patients with all forms of liver disorders, a clinical research enterprise that is one of the busiest in the world, and a team of hepatologists who cumulatively has over 1,000 peer-reviewed publications.

We treat the whole spectrum of liver conditions . Your treatment will depend on the condition you have. Through blood tests and imaging, our hepatologists (liver specialists) can assess the degree of damage to your liver and decide which treatment is right for you.

Medication

Our team is heavily involved in cutting-edge clinical trials , and many safe and effective medications in development can also be made available to qualified patients.

In partnership with our dedicated pharmacy team , we work seamlessly to get you the medication you need. We’ll follow you through the treatment and follow-up phases to ensure a successful outcome.

Some liver conditions can be treated with medications, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).

Hepatitis B

Our team of liver specialists manage patients with the hepatitis B virus. Our team will assess the degree of liver damage caused by the virus through blood work and imaging. Based on the results, your liver specialist will decide whether you should be treated with one of the approved antiviral medications to slow the progress of liver damage.

Additionally, our research unit is highly involved in many promising clinical trials studying new medications.

Hepatitis C

Individuals with chronic hepatitis C can be cured in as little as eight weeks with oral medications. Texas Liver Institute helped develop the cure for hepatitis C with research and assessment of special populations such as those with liver failure, kidney failure and those with hepatitis C after organ transplantation.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)

MASH is a condition that develops when fat buildup in the liver causes inflammation and scarring. The liver specialists at University Health use new medical treatments (resmetirom and semaglutide) to halt and sometimes reverse the damage to your liver.

Liver Transplant

In the event of advanced liver disease, a liver transplant is the only option. We engage with our nationally recognized transplant team and the living donor champion program to offer our patients the most choices and the best chance of recovery.

In some cases, our skilled liver transplant surgeons also coordinate with bariatric surgeons to treat advanced liver disease and address weight loss simultaneously. Few programs in the nation offer this combined surgery, and we are proud to lead the way.

University Health Transplant Institute is the nation’s best liver transplant program . Our patients have some of the best outcomes in the country thanks to our comprehensive care and state-of-the art technology.
