I graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 2000. I completed Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at the University of Texas Southwestern at Dallas. Subsequently, I completed an Interventional Cardiology and an Endovascular Fellowship at the University of California San Diego. I then joined the faculty at UC San Diego, and after three years moved back to Texas to join the faculty at UT Health San Antonio as an Assistant Clinical Professor. I am currently a Professor of Medicine and hold the Freeman Heart Association Endowment in Cardiovascular Disease.
I am the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at University Health. My clinical interests are in the endovascular treatment of peripheral arterial disease. This includes carotid and lower extremity disease, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, percutaneous ventricular support devices and complex high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions.
I focus on vascular medicine and am board certified by the American Board of Vascular Medicine. I am certified as a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI). I conduct a monthly Vascular Medicine Clinic and am constructing a vascular imaging and venous ablation program at UT Health San Antonio.
I have served as the Associate Program Director and Program Director for the Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship Program at UT Health San Antonio. In addition to taking an active role in Fellow training, I am involved in clinical research. I am the primary investigator on both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials.
I am interested in novel approaches to therapy for limb salvage and acute kidney injury following endovascular interventions. I am also involved in efforts to understand subclinical vascular disease in minority populations and serve as a co-investigator in the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort Study. The goal of this endeavor is to understand the prevalence, predictors and outcomes related to subclinical peripheral arterial disease in Mexican-Americans.
Research Interests:
My research has led to over 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
I am:
  • Associate Editor of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions (CCI)
  • Associate Peripheral Arterial Disease Section Editor for SCAI.org
  • On the ACC Interventional Section writing committee
  • On the ACC NCDR PVI Steering committee
  • On the XLPAD steering committee
  • On the editorial board for the Journal of Invasive Cardiology
  • Editorial consultant for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology
The intersection of my research and clinical interests has led to the creation of the largest cardio renal symposium in the United States: Cardio Renal Connections. As cofounder of this meeting, I have worked to bring together clinicians, nurses, students, researchers and industry leaders to address the challenges of managing patients with concomitant heart and kidney disease.
