Pediatric Allergy Treatments

Your child's allergy treatment plan will be determined by their overall health and how well they do with medication and procedures.

Allergy Self-Management

The easiest and most recommended treatment method is avoiding the allergen whenever possible. Your child's doctor may also recommend non-medicated therapies, like a saline spray or wash to rinse the irritants out of your child's nose.

Other ways your child can avoid allergies are:

  • Dust-proof your home
  • Stay inside when pollen counts are high
  • Wash a bedding and clothes often to eliminate dust mites
  • Wear a face mask when doing yard work

Prescription Medication for Allergies

Based on your child's allergies and the symptoms they cause, their doctor may prescribe:

  • Antihistamines
  • Decongestants
  • Corticosteroids
  • Mast cell stabilizers
  • Epinephrine

Allergy Immunotherapy

Allergy shots are a treatment in which your provider mixes a solution of your child's allergens and injects them under the skins to increase tolerance to those allergens.

Shots may be a better treatment option in those who don't respond to traditional medications for:

  • Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)
  • Eye allergy (allergic conjunctivitis)
  • Allergic asthma
  • Stinging insect allergy (bees)

Newer methods of immunotherapy include FDA-approved tablets that dissolve under your tongue.

Food Allergy Treatments

While there's no cure for food allergies, our specialists are using new treatments to help reduce the risk of severe reactions and build your child's tolerance to certain foods. You can talk with one of our allergy experts to learn more.

Some children may outgrow their food allergies, depending on the severity. Our team will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your child's needs. In some cases, your child may need to follow a special diet to avoid certain foods that trigger allergies.

If your child has food allergy, their doctors will prescribe an epinephrine auto-injector. Be sure to keep it with you at all times in case of a severe allergic reaction.
