Pediatric Outpatient Rehabilitation

At University Health, our pediatric rehabilitation team treats children of all ages with function and development conditions. One of our goals is to provide a continuum of care for your child.

Even after your child has grown up and graduated from traditional pediatric care, our rehabilitation team is happy to continue rehabilitation management for your child throughout their whole life.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

During your first visit with us, we will take the time to get to know your child and understand their condition.

After listening to your concerns, our rehabilitation doctor will carefully evaluate your child. The doctor will look for any neurological or musculoskeletal issues your child may have.

After making a thorough evaluation, the rehabilitation doctor will sit down with your family to create a treatment plan with you.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Team

You can expect to meet these health care professionals along your child’s treatment journey:

  • Pediatric rehabilitation medicine physician (physiatrist)
  • Physical therapist
  • Speech therapist
  • Audiologist
  • Prosthetist/orthotist

Outpatient Treatment Options

Depending on your child’s condition, you may have a range of treatment options to choose from, such as:

We also coordinate care with your child’s orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons. We will group procedures together so that your child doesn’t have to go under general anesthesia more than necessary.

Rehabilitation Education

During your first visit with us, you may hear some unfamiliar words and phrases. Our team will do our best to break down medical jargon into terms you can understand. Whenever possible, we will draw simple pictures, like of the brain or spinal cord, to illustrate your child’s condition and how we can treat it.

We also have physical models of body parts, like the spine, that you can touch and see. If we prescribe an assistive device, like an ankle brace or wheelchair, we will demonstrate those to you, as well. You will always have time to ask questions.
