Clinical Pastoral Education

Clinical Pastoral Education

The Bexar County Health District: University Health Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Residency is provisionally accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education. ACPE is the premier, Department of Education recognized organization that provides the highest quality CPE programs for spiritual care professionals of any faith and in any setting.

What is Clinical Pastoral Education?

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an experience in process education, which has been shaped by history and yet remains responsive to the present-day cultural developments that will affect your spiritual care formation.

The heart of CPE is reflection, discussion, and evaluation of the caregiving that you provide during your training. In a group of no fewer than three other students, a supervisor and additional consultants, you will explore what is happening in you as a caregiver, and what is happening to the people who are receiving your spiritual care practice. In your CPE experience, you will use verbatims, case studies, and other materials to present your spiritual care for supervision. The focus in seminars will be on what is happening to you, the caregiver, as well as what is happening to the people receiving your spiritual care practice.

The University Health Clinical Pastoral Education program is committed to cultivating an environment of acceptance and belonging through our support and celebration of individuals from all backgrounds, experiences, and abilities. We believe that discrimination towards any community, group, or individual is unacceptable, and that racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and ableism are against the values of our health system.

We strive to create an emotionally safe learning environment and honor diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas in our efforts to better provide world-class care to all patients.

Clinical Pastoral Education Residency & Certified Educator Programs

CPE Residency

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an action/reflective, interfaith, hands-on clinical ministry model of learning. The purpose of the University Health program is to develop competency in providing spiritual care for patients, families, and staff. Using case studies, verbatims, reflections, didactic sessions, individual supervision, and group seminars, students will gain self-awareness, crisis management skills, pastoral ministry skills, and evidence-based interventions while providing spiritual care in a medical facility.
