University Hospital has earned another “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog that sets standards for excellence in patient care. This is the third consecutive “A” safety grade for University Health and the only one for a public hospital system in Texas.
“The term used by the Leapfrog Group actually implies obtaining excellence through giant ‘leaps forward,’” said University Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bryan Alsip. “It takes a lot of intentional and dedicated work with many members of our healthcare team to reach, and maintain, this level of excellence.”
Sustaining high performance requires constant improvement, Alsip said, because the standards, metrics and benchmarks evolve with each performance period.
“Our success is a testament to our unwavering commitment to patient safety and dedication to provide the highest level of care possible.”
Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems that hospitals have in place to prevent harm.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program exclusively based on hospital prevention of medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for University Health,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to University Health, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
