University Health again named High Performing in Maternity Care by U.S. News & World Report
U.S. News & World Report has once again named University Health as High Performing in Maternity Care. This is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care, and along with University Health’s Level IV designations for its neonatal intensive care unit and maternity center, signifies its ability to provide comprehensive patient care for the highest-risk obstetric patients.
“Recognition by U.S. News as a High Performing Maternity Center connects better outcomes with high quality of care, but also reflects the services we provide,” said Women’s & Children’s Chief Nursing Officer Irene Sandate. “The new University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital is a beautiful, state-of-the-art environment, but it’s the level of expertise and compassion in a family-centered environment that sets us apart.”
Family-sized rooms, a high-tech labor and delivery unit, the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation Mother’s Place’s personalized breast milk nutrition, and many other factors contribute to the increasing numbers of babies born at the Women’s & Children’s Hospital – already more than 5,000 babies have been born here this year.
Parent-baby bonding through scent cloths
But our emphasis on compassionate care means our practices also encourage the most intimate and foundational bonding, such as our research-based scent cloth exchanges for parents with NICU babies who may face long stays.
The scent cloths are part of Family Nurture Care in the NICU and they’re a popular item for new parents, particularly those who are nursing, to help forge that bond during a medical separation with a newborn. Contact us if you’d like to arrange a story about this remarkable resource.
Objective measures of quality
The annual U.S. News & World Report evaluation of maternity care helps assist expectant parents and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity care. The evaluation’s methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates and vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) rates, among other measures.
