University Health rated one of America’s most socially responsible hospitals

This year, University Health again received an “A” grade from the Lown Institute, which ranks hospitals based on their performance in health care outcomes, value and equity.

The Lown Institute’s ranking of social responsibility includes a weighted sum of scores in each category. University Health made high scores in patient outcomes, value of services and commitment to community health. Out of more than 2,700 hospitals measured by multiple metrics, University Health ranked 18th in the state of Texas and 190th nationally.

“We are delighted to again receive an ‘A’ rating from the Lown Institute,” University Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bryan Alsip said. “This particular index is meaningful for us because scoring well is a reflection of our high-quality care, value and benefit to the community. It also validates our mission and commitment to serve.”

The Lown Institute also ranks academic medical centers, and University Health ranks 2nd among academic medical centers in Texas and 16th out of 223 academic medical centers across the nation. Many studies provide evidence that academic medical centers have better patient outcomes when compared to non-teaching hospitals, so to score well in this category is another notable achievement.

The Lown Institute takes into account the full breadth of what hospitals do as care providers, employers and community partners.
