Diabetes Alert Day - Free Community Event

One in three people in San Antonio has prediabetes, and many may not even know it. But all San Antonians can learn how to reduce their diabetes risk and improve their health on Diabetes Alert Day, Tuesday, March 25.

The importance of lifestyle changes will be highlighted at our free community event, where Maria Salazar will be present to share her story.

Salazar faced a double challenge: diabetes and a recent heart surgery. But instead of letting it define her, she's rewriting her story with every step, joining our Cardiology Salud program and embracing crucial lifestyle changes along the way.

“I enjoy the walking program because I can see and talk with my friends,” Salazar said. “They motivate me when I don’t feel like moving.”

University Health’s Texas Diabetes Institute will kick off Diabetes Alert Day at 9 a.m. with an informative presentation on nutrition and heart health for better diabetes management.

In addition, attendees will learn about diabetes risk factors and how to keep blood sugar levels within a healthy range. Participation is free but registration is required.

Visitors will have access to free screenings for blood pressure, glucose levels and dental health. Dietitians will be on site with healthy recipes for participants to sample and tips for eating a balanced diet. And giveaways will help kick-start a healthy lifestyle.
