The Observation Program is an opportunity for current college/university students to observe health care professionals for 1-2 business days, such as:

• Nurses
• Dietitians
• Technicians/specialty technicians
• Administrative assistants/unit clerks

At this time, we only accept students who wish to shadow one of the professions listed above. Physicians are not included. We are unable to accept observation requests from high school students and encourage them to explore volunteer opportunities at University Health.

Program Requirements

• Your college/university must have a current affiliation agreement with University Health
• Approval from the University Health department director
• Signed observation agreement & release form

If your observation experience is for a school course credit or required by your degree program, please work with your school coordinator to arrange your hours.

Requesting an Observation

If you are interested in observing at University Hospital or any of our other locations, you must complete the observation request form, which includes a HIPAA/compliance attestation. This observation form requires the name and signature of the provider you will be observing.

Due to the high volume of requests we receive, we cannot accommodate all requests nor are we able to assist in matching you to a provider. You are strongly encouraged to reach out and connect with a provider before you submit this form to help expedite your request.

When the form is completed with all appropriate signatures, please email it to Student.Placement@uhtx.com.

Approval Process

If approved, the applicant will receive an approval email indicating they can now coordinate directly with the provider or point of contact that was provided. The team or provider being observed does not approve requests; our team helps to ensure compliance with all University Health’s HIPAA and privacy policies for observations. All further communication will be directly from the provider or the point of contact provided to the applicant.
