Safe Kids San Antonio recognized for childhood injury prevention impact
When Safe Kids Worldwide looked at its partners throughout 30 countries to find the one to honor with a new international award, the San Antonio-based team was a natural choice to be the first.
Safe Kids San Antonio, led by the Injury Prevention team at University Health, received the inaugural Dr. Martin R. Eichelberger Community Organization Award this week for its unwavering commitment to the cause of childhood injury prevention.
Preventable injuries are the leading cause of death for children in the United States. University Health’s team works hard to help keep children safe through community education, workshops and safety events focused on topics like car seat installation, water safety, heatstroke prevention, safe gun storage, distracted driving awareness and more.
“We are thrilled to receive this prestigious recognition,” said Jennifer Northway, director of adult and pediatric injury prevention for University Health. “I am proud of our work to keep children safe.”
Safe Kids Worldwide is a nonprofit organization collaborating with partners in more than 30 countries to protect children from preventable injuries. The organization presented the award to Safe Kids San Antonio during the 2023 Safe Kids Childhood Injury Prevention Convention (PrevCon) held in Washington, D.C., which is one of the largest gatherings of safety professionals focused solely on childhood injury prevention worldwide.
Dina Perez-Graham, senior vice president and chief nurse executive for University Health, said, “It is an honor to be selected for this award but, most importantly, we are proud of the partnerships and the multiple impacts this special team continues to make. The University Health Injury Prevention team keeps children safe from preventable injuries close to home and throughout our region.”
And Northway’s team isn’t slowing down, working closely with public and private partners to add more events and address risks to children.
“We continue to collaborate with our partners in Bexar County to expand our outreach efforts,” Northway said.
