I am a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon. After obtaining my medical degree and general surgery residency at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, I completed cardiothoracic surgical training at The University of Southern California under the leadership of Dr. Vaughn Starnes. In 2019, I was fortunate to join the esteemed and excellent group of cardiothoracic surgeons led by Dr. John Calhoon here at University Hospital and UT Health in San Antonio. I am an Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UT Health San Antonio. I also serve as Associate Program Director of the Thoracic Surgery Residency program and am the faculty advisor for the CT Surgery Interest group at the School of Medicine.
I enjoy aortic surgery including aortic root and aortic arch surgery, multiple arterial coronary bypass grafting, and structural heart interventions including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
My passion is to continually improve patient's lives and outcomes through collaborative approaches to patient care, and through community education on the prevention and treatment of heart disease. I am a key member of the UT Health Heart Team, as well as a board member and President-Elect of the San Antonio Chapter of the American Heart Association.
A native of Texas, I am a graduate of The Juilliard School and was a violinist in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra before changing careers. Since 2012 I have been blessed to be married to Justin Wirpel, a principal partner at Isogent, an information technology services company.
Career Highlights:
I am an active mentor in both clinical and academic research for many students and residents.
I am on the board of the San Antonio chapter of the American Heart Association. Nationally, I serve on the Editorial Boards of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. I also serve on the Society Of Thoracic Surgeons Political Action Committee Board of Directors to promote advocacy for cardiothoracic surgeons and their patients.

Clinical outcomes and translational research.
Philosophy of Care Statement:
As a cardiac surgeon, I am humbled and honored to treat a disease that affects many peoples' quality of life, as well as life expectancy. Heart surgery is a serious undertaking. In addition to carefully evaluating my patients' anatomy, physiology, cardiac lesions and overall health, I take care to understand them as people, and to learn what their goals in being treated are. I believe this approach is valuable to having both patient and doctor work together for the best outcomes.
