University Hospital renews Comprehensive Stroke Center designation

University Hospital has again been designated a Comprehensive Stroke Facility by the Texas Department of State Health Services, which recognizes our designation by The Joint Commission. University Hospital is the only Joint Commission-certified comprehensive stroke center in South Texas.

Comprehensive stroke centers are an elite group of providers capable of treating the most complex stroke patients. As a group, they are responsible for setting the national agenda in highly specialized stroke care.

“In partnership with UT Health San Antonio, University Hospital delivers world class stroke care and remains at the forefront of stroke research and the training of future healthcare professionals,” said University Hospital Stroke Center Director Dr. Lee Birnbaum, who is also professor of neurology, neurosurgery and radiology with UT Health San Antonio.

University Hospital’s comprehensive designation ensures that stroke patients requiring the highest level of care are brought here so that they can have the best possible outcomes. It is part of University Health’s ongoing commitment to quality care that includes our designation as a Level I trauma center.
