San Antonio Chef Blanca Aldaco partners with University Health on World Diabetes Day

In recognition of World Diabetes Day, University Health Texas Diabetes Institute invites the community to a free event featuring a brand new and very local recipe on Friday, Nov. 14.

As part of the festivities, Chef Blanca Aldaco, owner of the popular San Antonio restaurant Aldaco’s, will partner with Texas Diabetes Institute dietitians to share a diabetic-friendly recipe created exclusively for the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample the recipe and learn how to prepare flavorful, authentic Mexican cuisine while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

A celebrated San Antonio entrepreneur and restaurateur for over 30 years, Aldaco also has diabetes, making her contribution to World Diabetes Day a deeply personal one. 2 This health and wellness event also includes free glucose testing, vision screenings, a healthy holiday recipe demonstration and a chance to receive a free turkey voucher courtesy of H-E-B while supplies last.

Diabetes remains a growing concern in San Antonio, especially among Hispanic and African American communities who face a higher risk.

According to San Antonio’s Metropolitan Health District, more than 14% of local residents have been diagnosed with diabetes, a rate significantly higher than both the state (10.6%) and national (9.3%) averages.

“Many people are living with prediabetes or diabetes and don’t even know it,” said Dr. Alberto Chavez-Velazquez, endocrinologist with University Health. “Events like this bring the community together to raise awareness and show that prevention and healthy living can be delicious and enjoyable.”
