SAISD to Partner with University Health System Creating Medical Professions Magnet Program at Fox Tech

The San Antonio Independent School District today announced a partnership with University Health System in support of the new Medical Professions Magnet Program at Fox Tech High School, which will be enrolling its first freshman class in the fall of 2010. The Magnet Program is open to students across Bexar County.

”University Health System officials have been instrumental in the creation of this medical magnet program,” said Dr. Robert J. Durón, SAISD superintendent. “Through their efforts and those of other supporters, we will soon be offering students the opportunity to study in the heart of San Antonio's thriving downtown medical community, with a rigorous academic curriculum focusing on the medical profession.”

Early in 2009, a committee was formed to create a shared vision for the magnet program that included members of the University Health System's medical and professional team. Together with SAISD educators, civic leaders and elected officials, they have spent a year guiding the program into existence.

The plan creates a small, college preparatory school with a pre-med curriculum – in the central business district – that allows students to draw on a wealth of health professionals in close proximity to the school.

"The Health System leadership looks forward to working with the SAISD to make this medical career magnet an educational center of excellence," said George B. Hernández, Jr., president and chief executive officer of University Health System. “Our downtown expansion provides even greater opportunity to bring students into the real world of medicine and healthcare.”

Through this partnership, health professionals at University Hospital and University Health System - Robert B. Green Campus will give students an "in the field" opportunity to explore the medical professions. UHS will provide mentorship and practicum opportunities, along with learning opportunities with health professionals for both students and teachers. Students will also participate in summer volunteer programs and community service projects.

University Health System is proud to be partnered with SAISD,” said Dr. Roberto Jimenez, chairman of the Board of Managers of University Health System. “Together, we can encourage young and bright students at an earlier age to seriously consider and prepare for careers in the healthcare industry here in San Antonio. This type of collaboration will make our city stronger.”

A total of 100 students per grade - freshman through senior – will make up the student body of the Medical Professions Magnet Program, with a total of 400 students once the magnet school reaches its fourth year. The current Fox Tech Law Magnet Program will continue, with a maximum enrollment of 400 students, making a total school enrollment of 800 Magnet students.

"We are truly fortunate to have partnered with an organization that has a genuine sense of community and has played an integral role in the well-being of our citizens for so many years," said SAISD Board President James Howard.

Applications for the Medical Professions Magnet Program are due March 15, and are available at Fox Tech High School, all SAISD middle schools, and on SAISD.net. For more information, contact Fox Tech at 226-5103.
