Road closure tomorrow in the South Texas Medical Center

One of the University Health helipads has a disabled helicopter owned by PHI Air Medical parked on site. Our other helipads are still available for patient transport, so flight traffic has not been interrupted.

However, the disabled helicopter will require a crane to remove it from the top of University Hospital’s West Parking Garage.

To accommodate the crane, on Thursday, Aug. 22, all four lanes of Merton Minter will be closed from Wurzbach Road to the West Parking Garage entrance starting at 9 a.m. The road is expected to reopen by about 3 p.m.

The West Parking Garage is reserved for employee parking and other entrances to that garage will remain open. The visitor parking garage, with entrances off both Medical Drive and Wurzbach Road, will remain fully accessible.

As a Level I trauma center, University Hospital receives patients suffering serious traumas throughout South Texas, including multi-trauma situations. We also have our own helicopter service for high-risk maternity patients, NICU babies and children from across the state who need a higher level of care. We have built redundancies into our system to manage such cases, including multiple landing sites. We also coordinate air ambulance traffic through Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council (STRAC) so other helicopter traffic will be managed for shortened stays during this period.

PHI Air Medical is referring questions to their agency, Deutser, at 713-212-0700.
