Kids with heart problems spend an unforgettable weekend at a life-changing camp
For many kids, the thrill of an overnight camp sparks joy and adventure, but for children born with heart conditions, the experience often feels out of reach. Parents worry about health emergencies during activities, and children may feel reluctant to attend a camp where they are singled out for needing a little extra support.
This weekend, University Health’s Kids Heart Camp gives children ages 9 to 17 with congenital heart problems the chance to experience the excitement, camaraderie and confidence-building other campers enjoy. They will soar on zip lines, master archery and dive into arts and crafts. They’ll be part of traditional activities like roasting marshmallows and making s’mores around the campfire.
What makes this camp possible is the support system: heart specialists and trained counselors who will be on hand to recognize and respond to medical concerns.
"Sometimes our congenital heart children feel different. At this camp, they’ll meet other kids who’ve had similar experiences. It’s incredibly reassuring for them to know they’re not alone," said Dr. Ginnie Abarbanell, chief of pediatric cardiology at University Health’s Pediatric Heart Center.
On Saturday, from 10 a.m. – noon, media are invited to interview and videotape or photograph the campers as they experience the excitement of an overnight camping experience. Their medical providers are available to talk about how Kid’s Heart Camp helps children develop independence and gain lifelong confidence. Please let us know you are coming so we can alert the security at Morgan’s Camp.
