Connecting Kids to Coverage

Keeping our children healthy is one of the most important long-term investments we can make, and the CareLink staff has been so successful at their efforts that they've been awarded a $1.5 million, 3-year renewal of the federal Connecting Kids to Coverage (CKC) grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services—and for the first time the program can be used to help enroll expectant parents to promote improved maternal and infant health outcomes.

CareLink has used that grant for the past five years to provide enrollment and renewal assistance to thousands of Bexar County children and their families, signing them up for Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Over the past 5 years, the Connecting Kids to Coverage grant has allowed our team to enroll 3,956 children and renew coverage for 2,187 children for CHIP or Medicaid. At the end of the most recent grant period, staff exceeded their goals in both renewing and newly enrolling applicants. Because of their success, the team has been invited to share their practices in national webinars so others can learn to extend these benefits to more families.
