Imagine needing blood and it not being available.
Every two seconds, someone, somewhere, is in need of blood. That person may be a car accident victim, cancer patient or have a bone marrow disorder. Blood also helps mothers after childbirth and people in major surgeries.
The truth is our blood is essential to our biological makeup. But we may not really understand just how important it is until we start to lose it.
The critical need for blood donations
In the U.S., the Community Blood Center estimates that 4.5 million people will need a blood transfusion this year. These life-saving transfusions are only made possible by blood donors.
Here are 6 reasons why you should be the one to help:
There is no substitute for human blood
Despite advances in technology and medicine, there is still no substitute for human blood. It can only come from human donors.
1 in 7 people who enter the hospital need blood
University Health is one of two Level I trauma centers in San Antonio and the only one that cares for children. This means we treat the most seriously injured children and adults every day. That is why we are always in need of an adequate supply of blood.
It takes just 10 minutes to donate blood
The actual donation takes 8-10 minutes, but the entire process takes less than 45 minutes. You can schedule an appointment during your lunch break. Be sure to eat a good meal before you donate.
Only 37% of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood
Only 37% of the U.S. population can donate blood, but only 3% of those people actually donate. This makes it difficult to keep up with the demand. Each new donor helps to keep up with the blood supply.
One donation can save up to 3 lives
Your donation has the power to transform lives. Whether it’s a car accident victim or a child battling cancer, a single donation of blood can save up to three people.
Free health screening
Not only are you saving lives, but you get a free health screening when you donate blood. You find out your blood type, blood pressure, cholesterol and iron levels, as well as your blood type. There are so many other health benefits to donating.
Be a blood donation champion
If you are looking for the right time to donate, it’s now. Blood donations are needed year-round.
