When to Seek Respiratory Care

Talk to your pediatrician if your child has any of these symptoms:

  • Coughing for more than two weeks
  • Waking up during the night gasping for air
  • Wheezing or shortness of breath
  • Repeated infections of the lungs
  • An abnormal newborn screen for cystic fibrosis

Your child’s primary care provider will refer you to a pulmonologist for specialized care if necessary.

What to Expect at Your Appointment with a Lung Specialist

Your pulmonologist will take as much time as needed to understand your child’s symptoms, answer your questions and make you and your child feel comfortable.

Usually, the doctor will perform a physical exam and order tests to learn more about your child’s condition and make a diagnosis. Then, you’ll explore treatment options and lifestyle changes to make your child feel better.
