University Health is the only locally owned health system in Bexar County, with an operating budget of $4.1 billion for 2026 and, over the past five years, investing more than $1.7 billion in constructing new facilities to expand access to care. According to this 2025 study by the Perryman Group, University Health's mission generates more than $6.7 billion in annual expenditures, boosting the local economy by $3.6 billion each year, and supporting over 35,600 jobs across Bexar County. Additionally, the local economic impact of its historic expansion plan totals $5.7 billion, and supports more than 26,000 jobs (all findings include multiplier effects).
With more than 12,500 employees, working in more than 35 locations – along with active recruitment for three more hospitals opening over the next two years - University Health is the largest and fastest-growing health system in our community.
As the only locally owned health system in San Antonio and Bexar County, every dollar and every decision is about expanding access to care and ensuring the people of this community don’t need to leave town to receive the highest levels of specialized care. The percent of University Health’s revenue budget coming from local property taxes continues to shrink and is projected to be 13% for 2026. This revenue supports the cost of uncompensated care across our network, funds health care at all Bexar County’s detention facilities, and supplements graduate medical education, preventive health, injury prevention and community outreach programs.
