University Children's Health Transport Team

University Children’s Health Transport Service is available 24/7 and is staffed by highly experienced pediatric critical care registered nurses and registered respiratory therapists. We provide safe, critical care transport to pediatric patients of all ages, from neonate to adolescent, throughout San Antonio, South Texas and beyond.

Advantages to Using Our Transport Team Sky Care

Every second matters – so we bring a mobile ICU to initiate care upon arrival.

Research shows that pediatric patients transported by pediatric specialty teams have fewer unplanned events during transport, including the reduced likelihood of:

  • Airway events
  • Cardiopulmonary arrest
  • Loss of IV access
  • Sustained hypotension and/or hypoxia without intervention

The University Health Stork One Neonatal Transport Team is available 24/7 for imminent deliveries and the transport of high-risk neonates from hospitals throughout South Texas.

Activating the Neonatal Transport Team

  1. Call the NICU Transport Hotline at 1-800-616-6122.
  2. You will be connected to a neonatologist from our Level IV NICU.
  3. We will arrange transportation and provide you with our team’s estimated time of arrival.
  4. A neonatologist is available for medical management questions prior to and during the transport.

We recognize families want to be close to their new babies, so our team offers return transport, depending on the baby’s condition and clinical needs.

Pediatric Critical Care

We bring a mobile intensive care unit and start care right away. We are able to provide ECMO cannulation at the referring facility and continue with mobile ECMO while on transport.

Throughout the journey, the transport team can talk to pediatric providers at University Hospital, including:

  • Pediatric intensivist
  • Pediatric hospitalist
  • Pediatric emergency medicine physician

Activating the Team

  • Connect with a pediatric intensivist, hospitalist or pediatric emergency medicine physician through Pedi One Call: 1-855-4-UHS-PED (1-855-484-7733).
  • Once the transfer is accepted, the transport team can be activated.
  • The mode of transport will be determined by patient acuity, the patient’s potential to deteriorate, travel distance, weather and availability of an aircraft (either rotor-wing or fixed-wing) or ground ambulance.

We are dedicated to:

  • Providing quality pediatric continuing education and resources to health care providers
  • Promoting professional development

Family-Centered Care

Our family-focused care allows you to join your child on a ground ambulance. If we cannot bring you on an aircraft with your child, a care team member will call you when your child arrives safely at University Hospital.
